Bidirectional Links

Monolog is a potent tool for constructing personal knowledge networks. Within this network, each node is no longer isolated but is closely connected to other knowledge points through bidirectional links.

In traditional note-taking apps, you might encounter a problem: you mentioned Note B in Note A, but when you view Note B, you have no idea it was referenced in Note A. Bidirectional links are born to solve this issue. They not only allow linking from Note A to Note B but also conveniently find the reverse link to Note A in Note B, thus forming a tightly-knit knowledge network.

  • Linked References: When you create a link to Note B in Note A, while viewing Note B, you can see at the bottom of the note that Note A referenced it.
  • Unlinked References: Sometimes, even if you didn't explicitly create a bidirectional link, but used tags or mentioned related titles, Monolog will automatically find relevant notes and list them below. This is called Unlinked References.

Bidirectional links help you create quick links between notes, building a tightly-knit knowledge network. You can create links to other notes, and in the linked notes, you can see all the links pointing to it, achieving multi-dimensional connections of knowledge.

Let's demonstrate how to create bidirectional links in Monolog using the Work Log example.

  1. Start Linking: Type [[ or click on the [[ button on the toolbar, and the editor will autocomplete [[]].
  2. Enter Link Title: Continue to type the title you wish to insert between [[]], for example, Work Log 002.
  3. Choose an Existing Note or Create a New Note: If there are notes with similar titles, you can select a title and click, and the link to that note will be inserted. If no similar titles are found, press the Enter key, and an empty note with this title will be automatically created.
  4. Modify Display Text (Optional): If you want to change the display text of the link in the document, for example, the title is Work Log 002, but you want it to display as [[Next Log]], move the cursor to the bidirectional link, and select Modify Display Text. Note that modifying the display text will not change the referenced note's title.
  5. Open Link: When the cursor moves to the bidirectional link, click Open to jump to that note.

Bidirectional links are one of the core features in Monolog. Create your first bidirectional link now and experience a new note-taking journey!
